Days with My Father

Days with My Father - an incredibly touching photo story by Phil Toledano.

I met him a couple years ago while still in college on a trip to NYC with other photography students. He has a lot of unique work, interesting concepts and is a pleasure to talk with. This piece is different than the other work I know of by him, it’s more personal and sentimental which you might expect. My eyes teared up while looking through these images and reading the story. It’s really powerful.

NYTrip @ 11th St Bar

Last night marked my third time visiting 11th Street Bar in New York.

The first was when I was still a student at RIT and took a class that brought us to NYC for a week. Throughout the week we met photo industry professionals spanning the range of the field. We went to advertising agencies, photographers studios, production companies, studio & rental houses, the New York Times, and heard from photographers, photo reps, editors, business owners and the various people who are involved in the photo world. That trip marked the reality of the industry to me and had me excited to graduate. Thursday night of the NYTrip is always, as far as I know, a gathering at 11th Street Bar of the students & teachers on the trip and the RIT photography alumni in the city. I feel like it was invaluable to me to meet people who graduated from RIT and were making it in the city, especially in such a laid back setting. The class/trip is an amazing addition to the RIT curriculum and is one of the experiences I remember most now.

It was nice to meet up with people I know in the city, alumni I hadn't previously met, teachers I had in college and the RITers about to graduate. I was impressed by the students that I met, not only for the work I saw and the enthusiasm to move here, but for the awesome April Fools prank they pulled on Doug, who was my teacher and adviser at RIT. They conspired with the bartender to give him a [fake] tab totaling around $723 and the reaction was priceless. My cell phone flash blew out the writing on the tab, which was numerous tally marks and a bill total, but here's a picture of Doug with his bill.

I can't believe I've already lived in the city now for almost two years. I wonder what my fourth visit to 11th Street Bar will be like!

Looking for Inspiration

I haven't been as diligent in writing on here as I want to be lately and it seems like a bit of a cop out to start again with a link to another persons blog, but that's what I'm going to do! I came across a blog post about the places the writer looks for photographic inspiration and I liked it. Inspiration is a hard thing to come by sometimes, I'd love to hear if you have your own methods!

Check out: Five Places I Go to Find Photographic Inspiration by Thomas Hawk

Lately I've turned a lot to painting with acrylics as a creative outlet, maybe I'll start posting some images of them here for feedback.I really enjoy painting but I'm starting to miss photography a lot. Luckily, I will be starting my project collaborating with a local senior center soon.

In college I found critique to be one of the more inspiring aspects of the creative process. A group of creative people focusing on what worked in an image and what could've made it better, added meaning or given it more visual appeal. It's nice to be told that someone enjoys your work but that doesn't usually allow you to grow as an artist, I think the real question is 'What could be better? How can I improve this?' even when it's hard to hear. I know I developed some of my stronger ideas in college through critiques and off shoots of conversations at them.
